Good essential questions have some basic criteria in common:
· are the questions a researcher explores while researching the topic.
· are open-ended and resist a simple or single right answer.
· are deliberately thought-provoking, counterintuitive, and/or controversial.
· require you to draw upon content knowledge and personal experience.
· can be revisited throughout the unit to engage you in evolving debate.
· lead to other essential questions.
· encourage a deeper understanding of a topic.
